As a supplement to the coating system in offshore projects, the sacrificial anode cathodic protection is always selected in all offshore projects. The engineering calculations from ISO 15589-2 and DNV-GL RP B-401 have been widely utilized in offshore engineering design. The main goal of having the sacrificial anode is to protect the offshore production asset in its design life.
These international standards give the technical evaluation and test method to address the performance of the sacrificial anode. Theoretically the life cycle of the sacrificial anode can be addressed by electro-chemical methods, however, in reality, due to the chemical component changes and the production technology changes, the performance of the sacrificial anode may not meet the expectation of the engineering design:
1. The test results between the test method of DNV-GL RP B-401 and NACE TM-0190 could be different.
2. The current generated by the different sacrificial anodes are different.
3. With the different service environment, the capacity and performance of the anode will be different.
