Providing cathodic protection for offshore pipelines is a key concern for pipeline operators. This is typically used in conjunction with a mainline coating. The standards, ISO 15589-2 & DNVGL RP B 401, provide a guideline for installing a sacrificial anode, which will prevent corrosion on the exposed steel in seawater by polarizing the steel in the electro-chemical process.
Theoretically, the sacrificial anode system acts as a battery. The recent standards give the general technical requirements for the performance of the sacrificial anode, like electric potential, electro-chemical capacity and also provides general chemical components for each element in the metal of the anodes.
During many years studying the use of sacrificial anodes for marine applications, we have found that, when the environmental conditions change such as water depth, oxygen level in the seawater and the seawater current rate, the performance of the anode will be different. On the other hand, the formulation of the anode for each of the different components will seriously impact the quality and performance.
