For every pipeline infrastructure project, anticorrosion is a key component of the engineering work scope. Typically there are two methods used to prevent corrosion.  The first utilizes a coating to isolate oxygen, water and chemicals from reaching the pipe and the second utilizes a cathodic protection system to actively reduce corrosion.  In most projects, both systems are used together.

 

The ISO standards are used by engineers to design pipeline systems.  In particular,  ISO13623 (Petroleum and natural gas industries — Pipeline transportation systems) and ISO 15589 provide guidelines on how to design the anticorrosion system.  Are these standards good enough for all projects?  Perhaps not.
